I would like to thank the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of Southern California for inviting me to judge their 2009 specialty show.  Kudos go to your show chairman, Barbara Hughes and her committee, for organizing such a first-class specialty.  I would also like to thank my hard-working ring steward, Sarah Fitzell for keeping me on track.  Sarah also organized the successful banquet in the evening following the show.  The show location was superb with excellent hotel accommodations and within an easy walk to the fairgrounds.  I thank the club for my welcome basket with delightful goodies.  The very special judge’s gift of the lovely wooden plate with corgi artwork painted by Liisa Coit will be cherished as a reminder of this moment.

Many thanks to the exhibitors for allowing me the privilege of judging your promising young corgis.  The quality of the entry was very good and I was pleased to have several outstanding youngsters to choose from in my final line-up as well as in the classes.  I enjoyed going over all the dogs and would be pleased to take several home.  Judging puppies can be a challenge.  In some classes there were tough choices to make and could easily be awarded differently on another day as puppies grow, bodies lengthen, and toplines settle down.

PUPPY DOGS 6-9 MONTHS (6 entered, 1 absent)

1. GREENWOODS FAME AND FORTUNE (Ch. Heartsong Brynlea Pavarotti x Ch. Sandfox Destiny) Breeders: Vicki Sandage & Deidre Rodgers.  Owners: Deidre Rodgers & Mary Greenwood.  BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX TO BEST IN SWEEPSTAKES
   This red and white puppy exudes quality and breed type!  Masculine headpiece of correct planes and proportions.  Nice dark eye.  Body proportions fit the standard well.  Nice length of body with a long rib, and excellent shape to his croup.  Beautiful bone going down to ankles.  Used everything he had on the go round.  Nice rear angles.  Clean coming and going.  For perfection he could use a bit longer upper arm to enhance his reach on side gait.  Topline had slight bounce on the move above whithers on this day but varied depending on speed of gait.  This puppy has an exceptional temperament.  What a showman!!!  Obviously enjoys himself in the ring.  Gave everything his handler asked of him.  I was delighted to award him the best male puppy in Sweeps on this day.
    
2. ESPRENCE BRADLEY (Ch. Rosewood Yankee Clipper x Esprence’s Intuition) Breeders: Lois Hawkins/MacDonald.  Owner: Lois Hawkins, RN.
   Another quality red and white boy of correct breed type.  Attractive headpiece.  Balanced outline front and rear.  Nice breed type.  Correct coat.  Nice neat feet.  Adequate mover in all directions.  Not as confident in the ring on this day as the first place winner.  With maturity and confidence he should do well in the future.
    
3. KEELES’ DREAM WEAVER (Fortins-CR Dreams Come True x Walnut Creek Tuckers Buttercup) Breeder: Marissa B. Keele.  Owners: Marissa B. Keele.
   This red and white had an attractive headpiece.  Dark eye and good pigmentation.  Nice reach of neck flowing into a solid topline that held on the move.  Tendency to knuckle over in front on this day.  This might improve with maturity.
    
4. VERILO CAMBRIDGE (Ch. Nebriowa Cole Haan x Ch. Shanteroo April Love) Breeders: Debra Oliver & Sheila Broderick.  Owner: Debra Oliver & Sheila Broderick.
   Another quality puppy.  Red-headed tri with a pleasing headpiece.  Dark eye with beautiful pigmentation.  Correct summer coat.  Showed well for his handler.  Higher on leg at this time than his classmates which could improve with maturity.  Would prefer a tighter foot with thicker pads.

PUPPY DOGS 9-12 MONTHS (3 entered, 1 absent)

1. VANGARD LIGHTLY TOASTED (Ch. Byendebrok Maplecreek, Baccarat, CD, HSAs, MX, AXJ x Ch. Merthyr So It Should Be) Breeder: Robert L. Simpson.  Owners: Robert L. Simpson.
   Sable with gorgeous coat & in excellent condition.  Lovely breed type.  Good head proportions.  Very masculine.  From across the ring he makes a lovely outline.  Very good rear angulation.  Topline held on the move however this puppy’s low station interfered with his reach in front.  More bone than I prefer seeing for a puppy this age.  Gave his handler a challenge as he appeared to prefer being elsewhere on this day.  Would prefer a more oval foot.
    
2. SENTINEL GO WITH THE FLOW (Spock You Are My Everything x Sentinel Winddancer Riccochet) Breeder: Gay M. Spear & Kim J. Smith.  Owners: Gay M. Spear.
   Tri color who left his coat behind on this day.  Soft expression, dark eye.  Clean coming and going.  Moved nicely for his owner with attentiveness and purpose.  A little high on leg and could use more bone at this time.

12-15 MONTHS DOGS (2 entered, 1 absent)

1. COVENTRY PENNANT (Ch. Maplecreek Back in Black x Ch. Coventry Quinella) Breeder: Les & Ginger Veik, Bill Shelton, Steve Leyerly, & Beckie Williams.  Owners: Steve Leyerly, Bill Shelton & Beckie Williams.
   This fawn and white dog entered the ring bursting with confidence.  What a showman!  Expertly presented.  Wore his summer coat on this day.  Correct head proportions.  Would benefit from a slightly bigger eye.  Nice length of neck flowing into a solid topline that held on the move.  Could use more angles front and rear for improved side gait.  This first boy won on his showmanship and “look at me” attitude that took him just a bit farther.
    
2. MAPLECREEK SUPERFLY (Ch. Aberlee Bransby x Maplecreek Playtime) Breeder: Mindy Holmes & Patricia Bittles. Owners: Mindy Holmes & Patricia Bittles.  Agent: Russell Allen.
   This is another quality red and white male of correct breed type.  Correct head proportions, but not quite the soft expression of the above.  Balanced front and rear.  Solid topline that held on the move.  Purposeful gait.  A little wide going away.  Handled very well but seemed a little unsure of himself in the ring.  Lost to the first place dog on attitude on this day.  This dog could easily push the dog above to trade places.

15-18 MONTHS DOGS (3 entered, 0 absent)

1. DESPRADO LOUISVILLE SLUGGER (Ch. Triple H Cal Ripken x Desprado Sweet Misbehavin’) Breeder: Robin K. Jones.  Owner: Robin K. Jones.
   Attractive tri color with good overall balance.  Would prefer a more oval eye.  Nice reach of neck flowing into a level topline that held on the move.  Good length of body in ribbing.  Adequate mover.  Bested those below on movement and balance.  Would prefer a more oval foot.
    
2. BRYNMOR HEARTS ON FIRE (Ch. Rosewood Yankee Clipper x Ch. Coventry B’Quest) Breeder: Mary Hering & Tracy Liston.  Owner: Mary Hering & Tracy Liston.
   Another with a balanced outline, good length of neck into a level topline.  Different type to winner, stronger in head.
    
3. MARYMEADS ROBERT DE BRUS AT CRYSMONT (Ch. Ninacorté Braveheart x Marymead’s Strip the Willow) Breeders: Betty Ribble & Deborah Blais.  Owners: Deborah Blais & Betty Ribble.
   Nicely presented tri dog.  Pleasing headpiece with correct planes.  Dark eye and good pigment.  Good reach of neck.  Needs to deepen in brisket.  Showed well for his handler.  Nicely shaped, tight oval feet.  Tendency towards plaiting when viewed from the front.

PUPPY BITCHES 6-9 MONTHS (10 entered, 2 absent)

1. SANDFOX PRELUDE (Ch. Heartsong Brynlea Pavarotti x Ch. Sandfox Destiny) Breeders: Vicki Sandage & Deidre Rodgers.  Owners: Vicki Sandage, Deidre Rodgers, & Mary Greenwood.
   This is a quality sable bitch of correct breed type.  Loved this bitch from the time she entered the ring.  Lovely neck flowing into a solid topline.  Nicely balanced front and rear.  Best mover in the class, covering the ground easily.  Showed well for her handler.  Correct coat.  Littermate to BOS in Sweeps.  Similar package.  Should finish easily.  Not quite the attitude of her brother.  Could use more reach.  This is an excellent bitch.  Would be pleased to take this bitch home today!
   
2. WHIMSY’S DROPS OF JUPITER (Ch. Letalone Creek Knight Train x Atlasta’s Vera Wang) Breeders: Angelia Hall.  Owner: Patrick & Lisa Biglebach.
   This is a quality tri color bitch.  Loved her breed type.  Pleasing headpiece with nice dark eye.  One of the best toplines of the day.  Nice arch of neck flowing into a solid topline that held on the move.  Balanced angles front and rear.  Beautiful bone all the way to her ankles.  Would like a more oval, arched, and tighter foot.
    
3. STABLEMATE’S DOUBLE DIVINITY (Blacksmith’s Benedict x Stablemate’s Penny for Yr Thoughts) Breeder: Cynthia Campbell.  Owners: Bentley Anne Fink.
   Nicely balanced tri color.  Showed well.  Moderate reach and drive.  Solid top line that held on the move.  Moved around the ring with purpose.  Good front and feet.  Unfortunate to be in the class with the first two bitches today.
    
4. NEBRIOWA CAMEO (Ch. Nebriowa Cole Haan x Ch. Nebriowa Veracity) Breeders: Thomas Mathiesen.  Owner: Thomas Mathiesen.
   Adorable red and white bitch with a sweet expression.  Coat in gorgeous puppy bloom.  Had to be examined closely on the day as her coat is profuse.  More compact body style than above class placements, may gain some length with maturity.  Showed nicely for her handler.  Preferred the shoulder assembly and reach of the above.

PUPPY BITCHES 9-12 MONTHS (3 entered, 0 absent)

1. ROSEWOOD SEA SHELL (Ch. Twinan Another Chance for Salvenik x Ch. Rosewood Breeze’N By) Breeder: Liisa Coit.  Owners: Liisa Coit.  BEST IN SWEEPSTAKES
   I loved this bitch from the time she walked in the ring.  Gorgeous breed type that should easily win specialties in the future.  Outstanding balance and outline.  Lovely headpiece with correct planes and proportions.  Dark eye.  Lovely neck blending into topline.  Nice set back of shoulder.  Moderate reach and drive.  Effortless gait around the ring.  True coming but a bit narrow going away.  Showed continuously for her handler.  She should have a BRILLIANT career!!!
    
2. DIANA’S SWEETHEART CHARM (Ch. Caamora Summithill Sal-Sa, PT, NA x Ch. Greenwoods Easter Parade) Breeders: Katelyn Williams & Terry Burian-Creel.  Owner: Denise Williams & Terry Burian-Creel.
   Quality red and white bitch who left her coat behind for the show.  Nice breed type.  Correct head planes.  Good shoulder assembly with neck flowing into solid topline.  Moderate bone.  Nice tight oval feet.  Unfortunate to be in the class with the winner on this day.
    
3. SENTINEL TIME AND TIDE (Spock You Are My Everything x Sentinel Winddancer Riccochet) Breeder: Gay M. Spear & Kim J. Smith.  Owners: Gay M. Spear.
   Red and white with a pleasant expression.  Showed nicely for her owner.  Also came in her summer coat on this day.  Nice length of neck.  Solid topline.  Preferred the movement and substance of the above two.

12-15 MONTHS BITCHES (4 entered, 1 absent)

1. COVENTRY NEHI SANDYSHIRE (Ch. Pinemeade English Leather x Ch. Sandyshire’s Phaedra) Breeders: Bill Shelton, Beckie Williams, Pat Sandy-Smith, & Steve Leyerly.
   This is a quality red headed tri bitch who held my attention with her outstanding outline and breed type.  Attractive headpiece with correct planes and proportions.  Dark eye.  Good prosternum.  Nice long arch of neck flowing into a deadlevel topline that held on the move.  Loved her length of ribbing with short loin.  Covered the ground with easy gait.  This is another bitch I would love to take home.
    
2. SEGNI AT COVENTRY (Ch. Woodbine Flashy Alibi x Ch. Coventry Mind Your P’s & Q’s. Breeder: Sofie Sadler.  Owners: Sofie Sadler, Bill Shelton, Steve Leyerly, & Beckie Williams.
   Another with outstanding breed type.  This red and white had a lovely head with correct planes and proportions.  Dark eye.  Good shoulder assembly with neck flowing into a level topline.  Nice short hocks.  This was a difficult choice between the first and second winners.  Preferred the overall outline and movement of the first place winner on this day but these could easily trade places back and forth.  Another I would be pleased to take home.
    
3. CRYSMONT MADGELENA (Ch. Ninacorté Braveheart x Crysmont Honey of Marymead) Breeder: Deborah Blais, Russell Barlowe & Elana Duarte.  Owner: Deborah Blais & Sybil Smith.
   Very nice type.  Good headplanes.  Nice feet.  Needs to mature and fill out in body.  Preferred the movement of the above.

15-18 MONTHS BITCHES (4 entered, 0 absent)

1. MILESTONE GOOD NIGHT KISS (Ch. Sandfox Megalia D’Oro x Ch. Milestone Doubles Partner) Breeder: Carolann Van Wyen & Donna Gilbert.  Owner: Debra Oliver & Sheila Broderick.
   Attractive red headed tri color.  Lovely breed type.  Correctly balanced head planes and proportions.  Sweet expression.  Dark eye.  Nice length of neck flowing into a level topline.  Could occasionally stand high in the rear which held her back in the final challenge for Best in Sweeps.  This bitch has an excellent shoulder and upper arm assembly with correct angles.  Nice prosternum.  Clean coming and going.  Easy side gait with best reach and drive of the day.  Showed nicely for her handler.  Bested those below on her overall breed type and movement.
    
2. NEBRIOWA JUST MY STYLE (Ch. Nebriowa G. Clooney x Brnayr Autumn Moon) Breeder: Tim Mathiesen & Tomm Dedini.  Owner: Sharon Berry & Tim Mathiesen.
   Quality Red and white of a different type from the first place winner.  Would prefer a more feminine head.  Very correct body shape.  Nicely balanced fore and aft.  Solid topline.  Moved with purpose around the ring.  Clean coming and going.  Not as sure of herself as the above.  Pushed hard for first place.
    
3. PENNYGLYN’S LADY CINDERELLA (Ch. Lin-Kel Nanteos Geraint x Ch. PennyGlyn’s Field of Lilies) Breeder: Maureen Wilkinson & Cynthia Campbell.  Owners: Cynthia Campbell.
   A nice red and white bitch with some sabling.  Nice length of neck and body proportions.  Good bone and substance.  Solid topline.  Unfortunate to be in the class with the above.  Prefered the movement of the above two on the day.  Should do well in the future.
    
4. CRYSMONT ELIZABETH OF MARYMEAD, HT (Ch. Ninacorté Braveheart x Marymead’s Strip the Willow) Breeders: Betty S. Ribble & Deborah Blais.  Owners: Jerry & Sharon Pratt & Deborah Blais.
   Red headed tri bitch.  Nice type and attractive head.  Very good feet.  Showed nicely for her handler.  Lighter boned than those above, needs to mature and fill out.  Topline has some give beneath the whithers while on the move.

Regular Classes: Mrs. Pat Bonner (Corgwood) UK

I was thrilled to be invited to judge the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of Southern California Specialty and thank Barbara Hughes the Show Chair and her able committee for organizing a well run show, my ring steward, Sarah Fitzell, was excellent and kept the ring running smoothly.

My thanks to all the exhibitors who brought me their lovely corgis to judge, especially those who had travelled hundreds of miles for my opinion this was certainly an honour for me.  I was spoilt for choice, in some classes the quality was so high it made it difficult, it is always hard to judge quality dogs sometimes only separated by splitting hairs, I’m sure some of these corgis will change places many times.  I did however find a few corgis with longer muzzles which were not to my liking this spoils their foxy expression also a few had incorrect round feet.  All exhibits had excellent temperaments and were a joy to go over.

Thanks to the Club for the wonderful basket of goodies which awaited us in our room these were devoured with much pleasure.  Also thanks to Barbara for the loan of the kettle so that we could make a decent cup of tea (thanks also to Liisa for the tea bags).

Very special thanks to Beth and Bev who collected us from the airport and Bev for taking us around showing us some fantastic places and introducing us to the wonderful pancakes and American fish and chips (a few more pounds on the hips – never mind).

I was so pleased with the wonderful gift, the wooden plate with the handpainted picture of our very own Ch. Corgwood Kouros (Ben), this was superbly painted by Liisa Coit and she managed to perfect his gorgeous head and expression – this was truly a lovely and original gift.

Bob and I always enjoy coming to America and meeting the people who are always so warm and welcoming, it was great to meet up with Jackie Petersen again who was visiting So. California, a really lovely person.  It was also great meeting Patti Seifert again, first time since 1988 when we took her and Sally Howe to The Welsh Corgi League Silver Jubilee Show, it was great catching up with all the news and views.

Finally a big thank you to everyone at Southern California for simply everything, only sad thing was losing my brand new high heeled shoes my own fault for taking them off during the banquet and leaving them under the table.

   Tri puppy dog of nice type, smaller in mould to my winner however balanced, nice head, level topline, ok for bone, moved and showed well.

   A lovely type puppy with a very nice head and expression, I would prefer a bit more of him but saying that he was balanced in height to length ratio, firm topline and a good mover.

   Dark red and white with sabling, stood well to show off his good outline, well arched neck with good length of body, well presented, moved o.k.

   Tri dog slightly larger than my winner, good neck and length of body, balanced with level topline, not so positive in front movement, presented in lovely bloom and condition.

   A well presented red and white dog who stood well to show off a good balanced outline, good neck leading to correct lay of shoulder, good turn of stifle, ok for bone, head did not appeal to me I would prefer a more foxy appearance, moved very well with purpose, all the dogs handled by this exhibitor were in excellent show condition.

   Another quality dog, lovely head and expression with correct ear set, good length and balance, good showman, moved well.

   A well presented dog of nice type who has a typical head and expression, shown in lovely condition, would prefer a tidier front movement.

   A lovely type puppy bitch, feminine with pretty head and pleasing expression, good eye, correct earset, short hocks, moved and showed very well for a youngster, could not be overlooked today, excellently presented in beautiful coat and condition.
